Changing Portfolio Slicer Excel 2013+ workbook external data location

Overview

Portfolio Slicer workbooks load several external files, typically including:

  • CurrencyConv.csv
  • Dates.csv
  • Dividends.csv
  • Quotes.csv

By default, published user workbooks are usually configured to load these files from C:\PortfolioSlicer\PSData\.

This page explains how to change that location in Excel 2013 and later versions when the required Power Pivot interface is available.

Important Requirement

You can only change these file locations if your Excel environment exposes the necessary Power Pivot management interface.

If it does not, keep the default external data location.

Before You Start

Before changing the workbook connections:

  • make sure the new folder already contains the required external files
  • keep a backup copy of the workbook
  • make sure you understand whether you are editing a user workbook, demo workbook, or report workbook

General Process

  1. Open the workbook.
  2. Open the Power Pivot management interface.
  3. Open the existing connections list.
  4. Update each relevant external file connection.
  5. Save the workbook.
  6. Refresh and validate the workbook using the new location.

Practical Advice

After changing connections:

  • confirm all expected files are present in the new folder
  • run a refresh immediately
  • verify holdings and values before assuming the move worked cleanly
