CompareTo table

Overview

The CompareTo table is an optional table that allows you to set up an environment where you can compare your portfolio performance with the performance of other symbols, usually market indexes.

For example, you might want to compare how your portfolio is doing versus Vanguard Total World Stock Index Fund.

Please do not delete or edit records with ID = 0 and ID = 1, as these are treated as system records.

Table columns

  • ID - sequential number assigned to your CompareTo record. Values 0 and 1 are reserved, and any additional record after that should use the next incremental number.
  • CompareTo - short name of the comparison target that allows quick identification.
  • Symbol - name of the symbol that represents the market index you want to compare to. This value must exist in the Symbol table.
  • AnnlAdj% - annual adjustment percent. Usually this represents the symbol’s annual dividend percent paid. Example: your portfolio profit for year 2025 was 10%. Symbol VT for year 2025 grew by 9%, but VT also paid 2.9% dividends, so total profit for VT for year 2025 was 9% + 2.9% = 11.9%.
  • Notes - more detailed description.

How this table is used

Important note - all Profit % calculations in Portfolio Slicer are approximate.

Below is the report that shows where this CompareTo table is used.

When viewing this report, it is best to compare data with full-year information, so in this example we will review year 2021. Here is how to read this report:

  • Your actual portfolio profit was 16.46%.
  • Your expected portfolio profit was 18.57%, which means your actual profit was 2.11% less than expected. Your expected profit is calculated by evaluating your symbol holdings, tracing them to symbol allocation, and then using the Allocation table assigned index symbol performance.
  • Total market index profit for the same year was 18.94%, which means your actual profit was 2.49% less than total market index profit. That means that instead of investing into your portfolio of different symbols, you would have made 2.49% more if you had just bought one symbol - Total Market Index (VT).
